RARE: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species
Bryn, a female Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) -- one of two Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits left, the end of the line for this race of animals. The other is a female at the Washington State University. Since there are no males left, this means only animals intercrossed with the Idaho race will survive. There were originally fewer than 20 of the Washington race brought into the breeding program, and there were some breeding successes but not enough 100% Washington race rabbits were left to maintain genetic diversity.
