All-American, Nebraska, 1995
The bald eagle has recovered thanks largely to the enforcement of penalties for shooting them and the elimination of the pesticide DDT from the United States. The chemical weakened eggshells, causing nests to fail until it was banned in the 1970s. This photo is of a captive bird at Raptor Recovery Nebraska, a group that rescues and rehabilitates injured birds. To learn about their work, visit www.raptorrecoveryne.org.
