A moccasin crayfish (Cambarus longirostris) at the West Liberty University Crayfish Conservation Lab in West Liberty, West Virginia.
This species was collected at Copper Creek, Scott County, Virginia.
The unusual shape of this species’ claw (chela) functions to serve as a hydrofoil, keeping the animal securely pinned to the bottom of the stream when the chela is positioned in a certain way.
