A Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) photographed on the grounds of the Symington Estates in Portugal. This species is listed as vulnerable by IUCN.
This is the 8000th species to board the Photo Ark. This rare insectivore leads a semi-aquatic life, with webbed feet for swimming, and a trunk-like nose for sensing prey and snorkeling. This animal was collected from a stream in the Douro Region of Portugal, within the framework of a study to determine its ecology because so little is known about them.
In the past 20 years, the population of this species has fallen about 60%, leading to conservation efforts such as this ecological study conducted by biologists from CIBIO Research Center – University of Porto. The pictures were taken during an expedition supported by Regional Funds from CCDR-N.
