Epiphytic mosses seem to smother a big-leaf maple tree along the banks of the Kennedy River in British Columbia, Canada. This tree actually encourages the growth of plants on its boughs by providing them with calcium from its bark. In return, the tree harvests the nutrients created by the epiphytes through a secondary root system just under its bark.
