Vernal pool fairy shrimp (Branchinecta lynchi) at Kansas University. This federally threatened species is found in vernal pools in the Great Central Valley of California, the California central Coast Ranges, and the Agate Desert in Oregon. It has become a flagship animal for vernal pool conservation in California, and is an important dietary component of migrating waterfowl. Ducks, sandpipers, and killdeer consume large numbers of this shrimp for the necessary protein and fat for their northward migrations.

This species is listed as threatened by the ESA and as VU on the IUCN Red List
