A birdwing pearly mussel (Lemiox rimosus) photographed at the Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Center. Shown here displaying her mantle lure, which mimics a snail. The fake fish is wiggled in the current in order to get a fish to strike at it, which will release glochidia (their microscopic babies) into the fish’s gills, allowing the mussel to move its kind upstream.
