An endangered shinyrayed pocketbook mussel (Hamiota subangulata) from the Chipola River drainage in Jackson County, FL photographed with the USFWS. This animal was collected from Waddell Creek.
This mussel releases a packet of larvae that looks just like a swimming minnow as a lure—when a larger fish bites the packet, the larval mussels hitch onto the gills of the fish and hang on for several weeks, allowing the fish to transport the babies upstream.
